For Straight hair - Use a CERAMIC flat iron (FHI, WIGO, or CHI) and make sure a heat-activated styling product.

Soft Curls - again use a heat-activated curling product with a ceramic curling iron (CREATE, CHI, WIGO or HOT TOOLS)

I'm in the same boat with you when it comes to naturally curly hair.

The best way I found to keep the curls together and to have more "bounce" is to wash with your normal shampoo, then leave a deep conditioner on for 5 mins. Do not brush or run your fingers through your hair after this point. Now rinse with WARM water and scrunch out the excess. Then use a mousse and again gently scrunch the curls toward your scalp.

For the best curls do not use a hair dryer, go to bed with your hair damp. Use several towels on your pillow to keep from getting it wet. By morning you will have great curls with bounce. (well untill you go out in high humidity).

oh...my...gosh am i happy to answer ur question!

I recently discovered the secret to nice curls myself.

i have had curly, messy, frizzy curls all my life and have been teased for it, i would straighten, blow dry, tie my hair right back, anything i could to get rid of my curls, thinking pretty spirals and smooth curls and waves were only for the movie stars, and in reality, curls were a curse.

BUT..... all we curly girls have to do? TAKE CARE OF THEM!!!! and its so much easier than i thought!

Rule #1: thou must rid thy bathroom of ANY shampoo.

thats right, shampoo is the culprit, ever noticed, u shampoo and condition ur hair and the next day or even next three days are a fly away frizz nightmare? shampoo is like detergent on curls, so so bad! and hairdressers will tell you that you must shampoo, coz conditioner doesnt clean properly, well the proof is in the pudding, i rid myself of shampoo, and am a conditioner girl only, and WOW my hair changed and strengthened and shined so much more in a matter of two weeks! even in one week i was seeing results.

if no shampoo scares u, what u can do, is when u need that extra cleansing, mix the juice of one large lemon in with ur regular conditioner, this will really clean it out so much better than any shampoo. i use the lemon mix once a fortnight usually. all you do to clean ur scalp tho, is massage the conditioner into ur scalp. instead of scrubbing it on, massage it in, the friction and the conditioner will clean ur hair just as well as any shampoo.

for any heavy product buildup/residue, (u shouldnt have to do this often at all) get a tablespoon of baking soda, mix it with a cup of warm water, wet ur hair, and pour it on scalp and then rest of hair, work into ur hair if u need to, leave it for a few mins, then rinse out with cold water. that will take away any product build up.

Rule #2: thou shalt resist the urge to attack hair with straightners, blow dryers etc.

Keep those things AWAY from ur head! they burn, damage and frizz ur hair up. they also stretch ur hair out so ur curls get damaged and quite loosened, put away the hot styling equipment for two weeks and you will see your hair getting even curlier!!! infact, dont even use a hairbrush. to de-tangle, use a wide tooth comb, even better, just use ur fingers. if u get rid of shampoo, ur hair shouldnt be that tangled anyway!

rule #3: when drying hair thou shalt not dry like ur drying ur dog off.

do not rub head dry in a rushed frenzy! This unsettles ur hair fibers and creates breakage and frizz. Blot ur hair dry. get ur towl and scrunch from ends, up to ur head, like an accordian plays, let ur curls form all by themselves, just scrunch using new parts of the towel occasionally so its not wet and soppy and unable to dry. if your in a hurry to leave and u dont want damp hair, and u cant resist the blowdryer, then whack a diffuser on the end of ur dryer (u know those big round things) and scrunch as u use that. after u have blot scrunched ur hair so that its damp, not wet, (or while u are scrunching with dryer) forget all ur products, no creams or anti frizz serums, just get a gel (which has PV and PVP/VA in the ingredients, and preferably no alcohol, clear, not coloured, and as little fragrance as possible) and scrunch that gently in ur hair. starting at the ends and working ur way up. then smooth gently over the top of ur head (where it can get most frizzy), dont ever be heavy handed when drying/styling ur hair, the point is to get as much of ur natural curl happening as possible.

once this is finished, leave ur hair alone, dont run ur fingers thru! dont pat and fuss. it will frizz you and make it worse.

for better curls, grow ur hair all one length, keep layers to an absolute minimum, and absolutely no higher than ur chin.

conditioner that is GREAT for curly hair, look for ingredients such as:

shea butter, vegetable oil, wheat germ, olive or walnut oil.

and:

either wheat, soy protein, plant protein

and:

either Panthenol, vegetable glycerine, sorbitol.

and:

some kind of moisturiser, popular ones found in conditioner ingredients are Amino Acids and Aloe Vera.

even try 100% coconut conditioner, u can get it from priceline.

Another great pick me up for dull curls to cleanse and smooth and shine during the day, is lavander spray. boil up a half a gallon of water, let it simmer for 45mins to get rid of impurities, then put 3 - 4 drops of lavander pure essential oil in, mix and leave to cool. distribute into spray bottles (make in such large ammounts so u dont have to do it often) and carry everywhere with you! car, handbag, bathroom, office, wherever! it replaces ALOT of expensive product u are probably using, smells great, is far better for ur hair, and does the job.

WOW this changed my life!

at the beginning it seems overwhelming coz there is so much info here, but it is SO SO SO worth it, ur hair looks shiny, controlled, gorgeous, everyone will want ur curls!

the initial, finding a good conditioner with the right ingredients, finding a good gel, learning to ditch product and heating equipment we so heavily depended on, can be a process, but once u do that, come to terms, lol, the process is so EASY, and takes less time than ur old hair regime, i promise!!!

honestly, this method is absolutely GREAT!!!!

from one curly girl to another, this works.

PS i forgot to mention, try to avoid conditioner with sillicone in it (anything in the ingredients ending with "cone" as it can build up in ur hair.)

I don't suggest using a heating iron or straighten iron like others have said. only because, it damages your hair and make it more able to break off when older

There is this product from Matrix (its in an orange bottle) use it! omg it works sooo good! and so smooth, I would also use a straightner, or blow drier. I use a strightner. They work really well and they are fast (especially with the matrix shampoo/conditioner/pomade). It really turns it stright! But when buying a straightner, get one thats ceramic. Hope this helps.
